FCMS Summer Reading 2010
Students will complete ONE assessment using the book they read.
Assessments will be due Friday, September 10.
How do I choose a book that is right for me?
1. Use the “Five Finger Readability” strategy.
Pick up a book you think might be interesting. Go to the first page of text and start reading. For every unfamiliar word you find, hold up one finger. If you have five fingers up before you finish the page, the book is not for you.
2. Use the “First Page/Last Page/Back Cover” strategy.
Choose a book you think might be interesting. Read the first page and the last page. Next, read the back cover. If those three are comfortable to read, the book should be.
3. Use the “Familiar and/or Favorite Author” strategy.
Look for an author you have read before or know something about. For instance, if you have read and enjoyed Hatchet, chances are you would enjoy something else by Paulsen.
4. Use the “Favorite Subject or Genre” strategy.
If you like science fiction, try realistic fiction on for size. History buff? Read a nonfiction book or a biography.
